vacation in Hohensalzburg Castle the town of Salzburg, Austria

Hohensalzburg Castle is perched high on the hill above the town of Salzburg, Austria.  This ediface or Hohen Stock measuring 820 feet long by 490 feet and whose name translates to "high floor" was initially erected in 1077 as a defense fortress and  a living quarters for the country's Prince-Bishop.

Visitors who include Hohensalzburg Castle in their all inclusive vacation itinerary can access the castle by a railway. In the initial phase, the railway or ruisszug, passed through the castle's upper courtyard for the purpose of delivering supplies and a maximum of three passengers. Believed to be the world's oldest functioning railway track, it has been in operation since 1495. During the castle's restoration in the 19th century, cable car transport was inaugurated in 1892.

One of the highlights of the tour is the 10-room Rainer Museum where guides do their best to assist visitors in experiencing the existence endured by WWI Italian prisoners of war.
Hohensalzburg Castle appears on specially minted coins, the first issued in 2006 and the second to honor the castle's 900th anniversary.

Music aficionados will enjoy the Salzburg Bull, a pipe organ assembled in 1502. The organ emits carillion-style sound at seven, eleven and eighteen o'clock daily.

Should you opt to tour the castle at your own pace, audio-guide equipment is available.
Along the way, be sure not to skip Golden Hall whose 17 meter central beam displays coats of arms belonging to early prince-bishop Leonard von Keutzchach, the Holy Roman Empire and those of notable German towns. Two openings in the walls of the nearby chapel afforded the opportunity for church attendance from a side room. The Golden Chamber served as private quarters for the reigning prince-bishop.
Children of all ages, from one to ninety-two, will enjoy visiting the Marionette Museum and Theatre where operatic performances have been occurring since 1913. A larger museum included on the tour contains castle artifacts gathered through the years.

At the conclusion of a one to two hour tour, visitors who elect to descend along the inner balley pathway have the added advantage of experiencing the typical medieval village lifestyle. Hohensalzburg Castle is included on all inclusive vacation packages of  Imperial Castles Tour, Castles of Germany, Austria, Czech Republic Tour and Royal Delights.
